Food is a huge part of human life. It is a pleasure, taste, gathering, and enjoyment. But beyond that food is so much more.

Have you ever ponder from what your body creates the building blocks in order to build your liver, brain or heart? And in the end your body itself?

Each type of food that is put into your mouth will turn into building blocks of…YOU!

If you eat crappy food and by crappy I mean full of pesticides, preservative or allergens, please don’t be surprised that your body works like crap.

We often eat stuff that makes us sick, because we either aren’t aware of some foods negative side effect. Or sometimes even when we know that certain food makes us sick, it simply tastes too good to give it up.

If you can listen to your body, be honest with yourself about your symptoms, put all the problematic pieces together then you are on your way to success.

It’s tricky to say that there is one and the only one type of food that is causing or aggravating Vulvodynia. Because every single body is different. However, based on my experience there are types of foods that can truly butcher your body and contribute to your pain.

NOTE: This is a continuation of the previous post, “#2.1 Conditions Linked to Vulvodynia.” As a quick refresh, here are some of the most commonly mentioned conditions that women with Vulvodynia (including me) also experience.

2.1 SUGARY FOODS

Sugar is often hidden in products that you wouldn’t even consider would contain it. Plus, there are at least 50 different names for sugar that appears on your ingredient labels.

WHY IS SUGAR BAD FOR YOU?

  • Fructose from sugar is primarily metabolized in your liver. When you eat too much sugar, your liver simply cannot handle it and sugar excess ends up taxing and damaging it (in the same way that alcohol and other toxins do).
  • Sugar damages your intestine’s natural lining by increasing its permeability (a.k.a leaky gut). You end up with unwanted stuff traveling to your bloodstream.
  • Sugar feeds bad guys like yeast, bacteria and parasites.

SYMPTOMS

SOME FOOD CONTAINING PROCESSED SUGAR

  • Sweetened beverages like soft drinks (a.k.a. pop, soda), energy drinks, sports drinks
  • Bread and baked goods (cakes, cookies, donuts, muffins, pretzels, crackers)
  • Candies and even nutritional bars!
  • Breakfast cereals
  • Sauces and condiments like salad dressing
  • Canned fruits, juices, jams
  • Flavoured yogurts, ice cream
  • Salt
  • Alcohol
  • Medication like Tylenol

SOME PROCESSED SUGAR ALTERNATIVES

  • Raw honey
  • Coconut sugar
  • Maple syrup
  • Stevia
  • Xylitol

2.2 GLUTINOUS GRAINS

Not only people with celiac disease struggle with the side effects of consuming gluten. Many folks nowadays suffer from high sensitivity to gluten, which is called gluten intolerance.

WHY IS GLUTEN BAD FOR YOU?

  • Gluten irritates your gut (intestine) like a papercut or splinter digging into its natural lining causing your gut to inflame (which contributes to gut permeability a.k.a. leaky gut).
  • Gluten kills your gut’s good flora, so you are out of your natural defense from the bad guys.

SYMPTOMS

SOME FOOD CONTAINING GLUTEN

  • Bread and baked goods (cakes, cookies, donuts, muffins, pretzels, crackers)
  • Beer
  • Cereal
  • Food additives
  • Pasta
  • Pizza
  • Sauces like salad dressings
  • Read-to-go food like soup mixes, microwave food

SOME GLUTEN ALTERNATIVES

  • Millet
  • Buckwheat
  • Amaranth
  • Brown or wild rice
  • Almond meal flour
  • Coconut flour
  • Pea, chickpea flour
  • Quinoa
  • Teff
  • Sorghum

2.3 Dairy Products

Dairy is nature’s perfect food – but only for calves! We aren’t made to drink milk above the age of around five when 75% of us stop producing lactase – the enzyme needed to properly metabolize milk sugar (lactose). The second culprit that makes people sensitive to dairy products is casein.

WHY IS DAIRY BAD FOR YOU?

  • Nowadays, dairy is full of hormones. Cows are either injected with growth hormones, sex hormones or are kept pregnant all year round in order to lactate! And then you eat this shit with milk!
  • Because cows produce milk all the time, they suffer from breast infections. To treat this, cows are then stuffed with antibiotics. Which you inject into your body with dairy products!
  • Lactose and casein are strong allergens.
  • Like all animal protein, dairy acidifies your body pH.
  • Cows often eat crappy food which contaminates dairy with carcinogen toxins.
  • Dairy products like flavored ice-cream and flavored yogurts are full of added sugar and other nasty stuff, like colorants and additives.

SYMPTOMS

SOME FOOD CONTAINING DAIRY

  • Butter and butter blends
  • Natural cheese and processed cheese products
  • Cultured dairy like yogurt, kefir, cottage cheese, sour cream, dips
  • Frozen desserts, ice cream
  • Milk
  • Whey, milk powder
  • Soy products (often they contain casein)

SOME DAIRY ALTERNATIVES

  • Almond milk
  • Coconut milk
  • Rice Milk
  • Hemp milk
  • Ghee (clarified butter)
  • Coconut oil
  • Nuts (almond) cheese

2.4 Processed and non-organic meats

Processed meat is generally considered unhealthy and is linked to numerous health problems. Processed meat is preserved by curing, salting, smoking, drying or canning.

WHY IS PROCESSED AND NON-ORGANIC MEAT BAD FOR YOU?

  • Processed meat is full of harmful and toxic chemical substances which can really damage your belly and body.
  • Non-organic meats including poultry, beef, pork are full of hormones and antibiotics.

SYMPTOMS

SOME FOOD IN WHICH YOU CAN FIND PROCESSED MEAT

  • Sausages, hot dogs, salami
  • Bacon, ham
  • Salted and cured meat, corned beef
  • Smoked meat
  • Dried meat, beef jerky
  • Canned meat

SOME PROCESSED AND NON-ORGANIC MEAT ALTERNATIVES

  • Organic, non-processed meat like poultry, beef, veal

2.5 Soy

Soy got its stellar reputation from Japan and their (according to some) “healthiest-place-on-Earth” reputation because of the long-living people who happen to eat soy. The problem is the difference in the soy we consume today.

WHY IS SOY BAD FOR YOU?

  • Nowadays, 90% of soy is GMO and contains MSG which kills off good natural bacteria in your belly and damages your digestive system.
  • Soy contains phytoestrogen which mimics your body’s estrogen.
  • Soy contains goitrogens which block thyroid hormones and lowers thyroid function.
  • Soy is an allergen.

SYMPTOMS

SOME FOOD IN WHICH YOU CAN FIND SOY

  • Processed, read-to-go food like soup mixes, microwave food
  • Soy milk
  • Tofu
  • Soy protein
  • Edamame

SOME SOY ALTERNATIVES

  • Organic (non-GMO) fermented soy products like natto, tempeh, miso
  • Non-processed, real, organic food

2.6 Refined and processed vegetable oils

While the unsaturated vs. saturated fat battle is still debatable, we know for sure that trans fats are bad for us. They are liquid vegetable oils turned into solid form in a process called hydrogenation (so they don’t go rancid). They are beneficial only to food producers as they are cheap, easy to make and have increased shelf-stability.

WHY IS TRANS FAT BAD FOR YOU?

  • Trans fats alter your liver’s nutrition handling mechanism.
  • Trans fats damage your cells, hormones, and brain.

SYMPTOMS

SOME FOOD IN WHICH YOU CAN FIND TRANS FATS

  • Ready-to-use frostings
  • Snack food: potato chips, microwave popcorn
  • Fried food from fast food restaurants: French fries, fried chicken, doughnuts
  • Refrigerated dough products: biscuits, cinnamon rolls, and frozen pizza
  • Vegetable shortening
  • Stick margarine
  • Coffee creamer

SOME TRANS FATS ALTERNATIVES

  • Healthy unsaturated vegetable oils like olive oil
  • Healthy saturated oils like coconut oil or ghee (clarify butter)

2.7 ALCOHOLIC DRINKS

A glass of wine in the evening after a hard day can be such a blessing. Alcohol lowers your emotional stress level and helps build social connections. However, alcohol can be damaging to your health in other ways.

WHY IS ALCOHOL BAD FOR YOU?

  • Alcohol slows your body’s ability to ward off infections and it stresses your adrenal glands.
  • As alcohol is processed by the liver and drinking it can weaken it by overloading.
  • Alcohol changes your brain’s chemistry.
  • Alcohol destabilizes your blood sugar and it constributes to yeast overgrowth – as it contains sugar and yeast.

SYMPTOMS

SOME FOOD CONTAINING ALCOHOL

  • Alcoholic beverages like wine, beer, vodka, whisky, etc.
  • Chocolates
  • Flavoured coffees, teas

2.8 CAFFEINATED DRINKS & FOODS

The health effects of coffee and caffeine are quite controversial. For some, caffeine is a super healthy food that can stimulate brain function or reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes. For others, it is horribly harmful to the body.

WHY IS CAFFEINE BAD FOR YOU?

  • Caffeine decreases insulin sensitivity, so your blood cells cannot respond appropriately to blood sugar. Swing time!
  • Caffeine by default contains large amounts of mold.
  • Caffeine is acidic and it acidifies your body pH.
  • Ingredients in a coffee can interfere with normal drug metabolism and detoxification of your liver.
  • Caffeine increases excretion of important minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium with your pee. So you might be more prone to cramps.
  • Caffeine wears out your adrenal glands which stress and tire your body.

SYMPTOMS

SOME FOOD CONTAINING CAFFEINE

  • Coffee and decaf coffee
  • Energy drink
  • Sodas
  • Teas
  • Cocoa products like chocolate, candy bars
  • Ice cream
  • Weight-loss pills
  • Pain relievers

SOME CAFFEINE ALTERNATIVES (FOR ENERGY BOOST)

  • Wheatgrass juice
  • Siberian ginseng tea
  • Carob powder
  • Lemon water
  • Peppermint tea
  • Greens smoothies

2.9 FOODS WITH YEAST & MOLD

There are good types of yeasts that are found in naturally fermented food that can help in rebuilding your natural intestinal flora and immune system. However, certain types of molds and yeasts may be hazardous to your health.

WHY ARE YEASTS AND MOLDS BAD FOR YOU?

  • Mold and yeast that can trigger allergic reactions and rashes, yeast infections and tiredness.

2.10 Foods with Additives

Under the umbrella of food additives, there are a range of different chemicals from food colorants, flavour enhancers like MSG, preservatives, artificial sweeteners, stabilisers and so on.

WHY ARE ADDITIVES BAD FOR YOU?

  • Depending on the type of food additives, they can trigger allergic reactions and rashes. They can affect your organs (like kidney and liver), brain function and disrupt hormones in your body.

SYMPTOMS

SOME FOOD CONTAINING ADDITIVES

  • Processed food
  • Bread and baked goods (cakes, cookies, donuts, muffins, pretzels)
  • Soft drinks
  • Package food, canned food, and frozen food
  • Processed meat
  • Sweets
  • Sauces and condiments like salad dressing

SOME ADDITIVES ALTERNATIVES

  • Non-processed, real, organic or local food

The list of foods presented here isn’t a comprehensive one! The examples are based on the most commonly mentioned problematic foods for women with Vulvodynia (including me). And yes, there are potentially other foods out there that you might find troublesome.

With this list, I hope to give you a head start on your new way of thinking. If you have never before connected food with your health, appearance or mood, it’s time to look into this connection!

Everything in your body’s connected. Vulvodynia, with other conditions. Vulvodynia and other conditions, with food. Start to observe your body. Notice your body’s reactions after certain foods. Detect the relation between different symptoms and the foods that you eat. This will help you to better treat your body, so your body can better treat you.

Your body is like your personal car. When thinking about a car, for a lot of people, it’s obvious that if they would put the wrong type of gas into it, it will simply start to malfunction. Or even break. Well, the same goes for your body. Whatever you put in you will get back in the guise of your health, appearance or mood. Would you fill up your brand new Ferrari with fuel from a dingy, smelly, secluded gas station with questionable gas quality?

Please remember that your body is the most precious vehicle that you’ll be using on this Earth. You can already see and feel what is happening when it isn’t working properly.

What are your experiences with these foods? Have you cut any of them out from your diet and noticed any changes to your health? What other foods have caused you problems?
